Introducing the variegated string of pearls, known as Curio rowleyanus variegata (formerly known as Senecio rowleyanus variegated). The variegated string of pearls is called so because of its unique, beautiful patterns of white, cream-colored, or even pink markings on its leaves.

This Senecio rowleyanus variegated plant has trailing stems that resemble a string of pearls, with small, bead-like leaves. These markings can take various forms, such as stripes, spots, or marbled patterns, creating a visually striking contrast against the green background of the leaves.

The leaves of the variegated string of pearls are small, bead-like, and round, resembling tiny pearls cascading down from the stems, and are up to 2 feet long.

Each leaf is plump and translucent, giving it a delicate and ethereal look.

The variegation adds an extra layer of charm and elegance to the trailing succulent plant, making it a captivating addition to any plant collection or indoor space.

Like its non-variegated counterpart, the variegated form of String of Pearls is a trailing or hanging pearl succulent, making it perfect for hanging pots or trailing down from shelves or containers. Its cascading growth habit creates a visually appealing display, especially when the variegated leaves catch the light and highlight the patterns.

The flowers of the variegated String of Pearls plant are small, star-shaped, and white. These delicate blooms add a lovely touch to the already captivating appearance of the variegated string of pearls plant during the spring and summer seasons.

While the flowers are not the main feature of the variegated string of pearls, they can be a delightful surprise when they appear.

When and How to Water Your Variegated String of Pearls

Like other succulents, this succulent is adapted to survive in arid conditions so that it can tolerate drought better than excessive moisture.  It's important to follow a careful watering routine. Between waterings, let the soil completely dry out. To prevent root rot, avoid overwatering. Underwatering is always preferable to overwatering for this plant.

Water your variegated string of pearls succulent every 2-3 weeks during the growing season and reduce watering to once every 4 to 6 weeks during winter dormancy.

In the spring and summer, water your Senecio rowleyanus variegated regularly and let the soil dry out completely before watering again. When you water, soak the soil thoroughly until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot. This helps keep the roots healthy and prevents overwatering.

In the fall and winter, water only when the soil is completely dry as the plant's growth slows during these cooler months. Keep the plant in a dry environment and avoid high humidity, as excess moisture can increase the risk of root rot.

Do not be concerned if all the leaves fall off; simply stop watering and wait until new growth begins. Care must be taken with watering, as they tend to become swollen and untidy in their growth habits if given too much water and shade.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your String of Pearls Plant

When growing indoors, they enjoy soaking up the sun, so placing them near a sunny window where they can receive atleast 6 hours of bright sunlight is ideal.

Finding the right balance of light is crucial for the Senecio rowleyanus variegated plant's health and growth.

When growing outdoors, your variegated string of pearls prefers full sun to partial shade.

It can grow in slightly dappled shade, including 3-6 hours a day of direct sun throughout the year, which encourages flowering and heavy leaf production.

However, be cautious of prolonged direct sunlight for over 6 hours, as it can scorch the delicate leaves.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The variegated string of pearls plant prefers sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture or wet soil can promote root and stem rot or damage its shallow roots. Planet Desert specializes in most succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

When fertilizing, feed it once a year with a balanced fertilizer, such as one with an NPK ratio of 5-10-5. However, be cautious not to over-fertilize, as it can cause damage to your Senecio plant. Remember, it's always better to under-fertilize than to over-fertilize succulents like the Variegated String of Pearls.

Hardiness Zone & More

In the United States, the string of pearls plant is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9-11.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85 F, so it's important to keep it in a warm and cozy environment.

This plant is adaptable and can tolerate average indoor humidity levels.

It does not like hot weather and requires cool air with plenty of airflow. However, it's important to avoid excessively dry conditions, as they can cause the leaves to shrivel. If the air in your home is particularly dry, try placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier to increase humidity.

How to Grow Indoors

This succulent is easy to grow indoors when provided with the right light, soil, and watering routine.

  1. Place in bright, indirect light for 4 to 6 hours daily, or use a grow light if natural light is limited.
  2. Use a well draining succulent mix amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse sand.
  3. Grow in a small terracotta pot with drainage holes to help prevent excess moisture buildup.
  4. Water only when the pearl like leaves start to look slightly dull or wrinkled.
  5. Enjoy the anticipation of its blooming by misting it with water to increase humidity.
  6. Keep temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and protect from drafts and air conditioning vents.

Wildlife – String of Pearls Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

According to the ASPCA, Senecio Rowleyanus Variegated is mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if ingested in large amounts. So, if you have furry friends at home, it's best to keep your string of pearls out of their reach or opt for pet-friendly alternatives.

How to Propagate Your Variegated String of Pearls Succulent

To propagate the variegated String of Pearls succulent, you can take stem cuttings and root them in well-draining soil. Make sure to let the cuttings dry for a few days before planting them. Maintain a light moisture level in the soil until the cuttings establish roots. It's a fun and rewarding way to expand your collection of these lovely ground-cover succulent plants.

Ends in a cliffhanger
Format: Kindle
Thankfully, the next book is already available. Roxy Collins is the queen of omegaverse slow burn. This particular series is omegaverse with wolf shifters. Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Lots of suspense and trying to figure out what is true and what's really going on. I loved it! Pretty spicy once the action starts. Heats are pretty much always spicy. There is a little bit of male interaction, but not full-on shmex. Definitely recommend.

Epic!!!!
Format: Kindle
Absolutely addicted from the first page. The twists and turns, world building and character development all come together for the perfect Omegaverse. And let's not forget that spice because knots are life and these are spectacular. Running for book #2 because that cliffhanger was torturous.

Fun with a late blooming omega
Format: Kindle
I like this book. The story is fun, cute, and sexy. There's just a little drama, some excellent, steamy scenes, and a fairly good relationship building storyline. I especially like how all the main characters are a bit older than the usual 20 somethings I tend to see in this kind of book. Having said that, I wish there were more descriptions of the places, as well as the food in the fancy restaurant. I enjoyed the cocktails at the club, so I missed that kind of detail when Gray took Madison on a dinner date. I also wish there had been more interaction between Lucas and Madison, and Lucas and Rian. It felt a bit lopsided, with a focus on Rian, Madison, and Gray. I wish it had been proofread - there are a lot of typos, but nothing too distracting.

Madison Deserved Better
Format: Kindle
Madison was a beta...except she wasn't any longer. She was a late presenting Omega. And she was struggling. She was tall and thin, not tiny and curvy. She was opinionated. She was everything an Omega was not. After suffering through her first heat, her friends took her to Ardor, a club where Omegas came to safely find Alphas. She's not expecting much but then she connects with a sexy beta. And when she meets his Alphas, they set her body on fire. Maybe, she's found her no-strings-attached heat pack. Maybe, she's found something more. I could not connect with the characters in this book, so their story never resonated with me. And there was no love story; there was sex. Grey made it clear from the beginning that he had a true love and it was his beta boy, Rian. He went so far as to reassure Rian “Say the word, I’ll never touch her again. Lucas can put the babies in her. I only need you, beta boy”. So, Madison was there for babies, no emotions needed. Nice. No, thank you. I want the Omega to be the center of their world, not an incubator. Lucas and Rian weren't any better. After her heat, they let her leave. Not one of them made her feel valued. No one gave her a reason to stay or even offered a cuddle. And the sex didn't even come across as mind-blowing. Madison deserved better.
