Seated portrait of Sahail bin Tahi, a member of Wilfred Thesiger's travelling party, on his camel in the region surrounding Liwa oasis. Sahail bin Tahi, a tribesman of the Mudairiba lineage of Rashid Bedouin, kneels atop his camel [most of the camel is outside the frame]. He holds a camel stick in one hand and looks into the far left foreground. He is wearing a plain ghutra (headscarf), and a wraparound skirt under his thobe (long shirt). Behind him rolling sand ridges dotted with a few tufts of qassis (sedge) stretch out into the distance. This image was taken during Wilfred Thesiger's journey from Al Ain to Liwa oasis, Al Dhafra and Baynunah sands in November and December 1948.
