Cigar Wrasse (Diproctacanthus xanthurus)Overview
The Cigar Wrasse is a slender, elegant reef species known for its torpedo-shaped body, bright yellow tail, and striking blue-green hues. Juveniles act as cleaner fish, removing parasites from other reef inhabitants, while adults transition to a more omnivorous diet. Peaceful, graceful, and constantly on the move, this wrasse adds both utility and beauty to larger reef aquariums.
OriginFound throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Red Sea, Diproctacanthus xanthurus inhabits coral-rich lagoons and reef slopes where it often forms cleaning associations with larger fish.
FeedingIn captivity, it thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. Multiple small daily feedings are recommended to mimic its active grazing behavior.
Tank MatesPeaceful and reef-safe with most species. Ideal tank mates include tangs, angelfish, gobies, and other non-aggressive wrasses. Avoid large predatory or highly territorial fish.
AggressionGenerally peaceful, though juveniles may show mild territoriality at cleaning stations. Should be housed singly unless kept in an exceptionally large aquarium.
Experience LevelBest suited for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Requires a mature system, excellent water quality, and frequent feeding to maintain condition.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 75°F – 81°F (24°C – 27°C)
- Salinity: 1.020 – 1.025 SG
