Ángel Martínez has dedicated 37 years to the Venezuelan cuatro. He studied directly under Master Fredy Reyna — the undisputed father of the modern cuatro technique — and complemented his training with jazz harmony under Gerry Weil. He has performed internationally, won awards for his recording work, and taught for years at Venezuela's Juan José Landaeta Conservatory.

About Ángel Martínez

Ángel was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and began studying the cuatro at 18 after hearing Jesús Sevillano's Curruchá — a piece that changed his life. He went on to study with Master Fredy Reyna at the Fundación Fredy Reyna, and later deepened his harmonic understanding with jazz guitarist Gerry Weil. He has also studied with Abel Carlevaro, Rómulo Lazarde, and other distinguished musicians.

In 2013, he received an international award for his CD "Encuentro: El cuatro Venezolano y el tres cubano" — a collaboration with legendary Cuban tres player Pancho Amat. He has served as an instructor at the Juan José Landaeta Conservatory and has substituted for Master Fredy Reyna in cuatro courses.

He writes regularly about cuatro history and technique for TuCuatro's CamburPinton editorial platform.
