The Tyan Tempest S5397 is engineered to be the steadfast heartbeat of demanding data-center environments. Built around the Intel i5400B chipset (famously known as Seaburg) and paired with the Socket J LGA-771 design, this Extended ATX motherboard is purpose-built for memory-intensive server workloads and high-performance computing (HPC). If you’re deploying virtualization, database services, scientific computation, or other compute-heavy applications, the Tempest S5397 delivers the reliability, scalability, and sustained performance that enterprise environments demand. From dense server racks to value-driven HPC clusters, this board is designed to deliver consistent throughput, robust integration, and long-term battlefield-tested stability.

With support for 45nm Quad-Core Xeon 5400 series processors, the Tempest S5397 unlocks faster compute cycles for multi-threaded applications, better parallelism, and improved throughput under demanding workloads. The processor compatibility, combined with the Seaburg-based chipset, translates into a platform capable of handling large memory footprints, complex virtualization environments, and compute-intensive workloads with confidence. In data-center terms, that means higher VM density, more parallel processing, and the ability to scale as business needs evolve without a complete platform refresh. The Extended ATX form factor provides ample expansion room for high-speed I/O, storage controllers, and networking options, making the Tempest S5397 a versatile foundation for modern server deployments.

Designed for reliability and uptime, the Tempest S5397 emphasizes robust power delivery, rigid thermal management, and enterprise-grade stability to minimize maintenance and reduce mean time to repair. The motherboard is built to withstand continuous operation in dense server environments, with thoughtful routing and protection for essential components. Its architecture supports a wide range of server use cases—from database back-ends and in-memory caching to virtualized hosts and HPC nodes—while maintaining a degree of enterprise flexibility that helps you future-proof your investment.

In terms of expansion, the Extended ATX layout on the Tempest S5397 enables multiple PCIe and legacy expansion options, so you can tailor a platform to your exact networking, storage, and acceleration needs. The board is designed to accept high-performance NICs, storage controllers, and specialized accelerator cards, helping you optimize data throughput, I/O bandwidth, and offload capabilities. For organizations pursuing performance-per-watt efficiency and cost-effective scaling, this motherboard offers a compelling blend of processing power, memory capability, and expansion flexibility—all in a compact, enterprise-ready form factor.

Additionally, the Tempest S5397 is crafted with fault-tolerant design principles that align with data-center best practices. Its layout minimizes signal interference, improves thermal dissipation, and supports stable operation in multi-processor configurations. For HPC workloads, this means consistent compute performance under heavy workloads and reduced downtime during calibration or optimization cycles. The platform’s architecture is also conducive to software-defined infrastructure, virtualization, and large-scale cluster deployments, where predictable performance and long-term reliability are critical to achieving service-level objectives.

how to install Tyan Tempest (S5397) Server Motherboard

Installing the Tyan Tempest S5397 in your server chassis should follow standard enterprise-building practices, with attention to static safety, proper torque on mounting screws, and correct cable management to ensure reliability and airflow. Before you begin, power down all equipment, unplug from power sources, and discharge any static buildup by grounding yourself or using an antistatic strap. Prepare a clean workspace and verify that your chassis is compatible with an Extended ATX motherboard in terms of form factor, I/O shield, and airflow.

  • Install the CPU into the Socket J LGA-771 socket, aligning the notches correctly and securing the processor retention mechanism as specified in the motherboard manual. Apply thermal interface material if required, and attach the CPU cooler with even pressure to ensure reliable heat transfer and stable thermals during operation.
  • Seat the memory modules in their proper DIMM slots according to the manufacturer’s guidelines for dual-channel or multi-channel configurations. Ensure modules are fully seated and locked to avoid intermittent faults during startup or under load. Verify that memory type and speed align with CPU and chipset support to maximize performance and stability.
  • Mount the motherboard into the Extended ATX chassis using the supplied standoffs and screws. Route power, data, and I/O cables cleanly to minimize interference and maintain airflow. Connect the power supply, ensuring that all required rails (CPU, memory, and auxiliary power) are provisioned to support maximum load scenarios as defined by the platform.
  • Connect essential data interfaces, including storage controllers, networking adapters, and any required PCIe or legacy expansion cards. Confirm that PCIe slot spacing, lane requirements, and card heights align with the chassis and add-on cards to prevent clearance issues.
  • Power on and enter the BIOS/UEFI to configure system parameters for server operation. Set boot order, enable virtualization features if needed, configure memory profiles, and establish any enterprise-specific settings such as NUMA awareness, IOMMU, or lane assignments for PCIe devices. Perform a POST test and run initial hardware health checks to verify correct CPU, memory, and I/O detection before proceeding to full-scale deployment.

Seems like a decent product, but it's not for me
First off, a small caveat: this is the first manual grinder I have used. I am trying to highlight things I think might be unique to this model, but some of these might be "that's just how manual grinders work" problems. First and foremost, I can only cram about 20g of coffee into here at one time. If I'm making an 8oz cup, that tends to be enough -- but no larger than that. I also find it hard to load; last time I tried to just pour beans in most of them ended up on the floor. One scoop at a time is annoying if you are adding 20 grams of coffee, especially if you use a small scoop. Also, I personally dislike that the body that holds the unground beans is opaque. I have to turn the thing upside down to determine if I have more left in there to grind or not. This is likely the same for other models but I don't think it makes for an ideal user experience. Now, on the upside, it's compact, easy to use, and easy to clean. I don't know how to gauge the accuracy or consistency of the grind, but it seems to produce a somewhat finer grind than my electric burr grinder at what I would expect to be the same setting (20/40 on here is more fine than 14/28 on the other grinder, even though I would expect both of those to be "medium"). I'm someone who prefers slightly coarser grind, even for pour over, so this is another strike against it in my book. I have only used it two or three times due to usually making larger cups that this can accommodate, and also not enjoying spending 5 minutes rotating my arms to get the coffee ground. So I also cannot speak to durability, but the plastic and glass both seem sturdy so I do expect it to last. All in all, I love that it is lightweight, portable, and easy to clean, but I think I'm someone who prefers the ease of use that an electronic grinder can provide. And seriously, IDK how anyone is getting more than 20g of coffee into this thing at one time.

Almost blew up my microwave
Size: 20 Ounces, Size: 20 Ounces
TL;DR "A hilarious microwave mistake turned into a great home cafe upgrade. This 20oz cup is straightforward to handle, looks incredibly professional, and holds a level of heat that will literally burn you if you aren't careful." . Bought this for homemade coffee brewing, just to spice things up. But as I go ahead to heat up my new shiny stainless steel milk frother cup in the microwave, whoopdy doo. Ya can’t put stainless in the microwave! Regardless, it’s still a straightforward frother cup to handle, making it a great dollar investment for upgrading my home cafe setup. . 1. Spotless Stainless Steel: Its sleek appearance made me feel professional in the hands of an amateur like moi. Great quality! 2. Temperature Retention: I accidentally burnt myself because it stayed so hot, but that is a major positive. Proving the insulation works perfectly and keeps the milk piping hot. 3. Size: The 20oz capacity is accurate, providing the perfect amount of space for frothing without any overflow.
