The most common filter is made of cordierite. Cordierite filters provide excellent filtration efficiency, are relatively inexpensive (comparison with Sic wall flow filter). The major drawback is that cordierite has a relatively low melting point.

| Noble metals (such as platinum, palladium) or metal oxides (such as CeO₂, ZrO₂) are usually coated as catalysts to promote the oxidation reaction of particulate matter (PM). It can passively regenerate through catalytic reaction at a lower temperature (about 250 - 350°C), convert soot into CO₂ and reduce the frequency of active regeneration (high temperature combustion). It can catalyze the conversion of NOₓ at the same time (such as SCR function) to achieve coordinated treatment of multiple pollutants. | It only relies on physical filtration and needs to actively regenerate and burn soot at high temperature (about 550 - 650°C), which has higher energy consumption and strict requirements on engine operating conditions. It cannot handle gaseous pollutants such as NOₓ. |
