From the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the author presents a fictitious narrative about the life of a young girl and the rich interplay of the lives of villagers. What is also evident is the luxury of Ôvillage lifeÔ specific to rural societies. Theirs is a story of challenges and triumphs. The narrative is seen through the eyes of the young girl ÒDanniiÓ. Although she, along with other villagers, benefited from the simple lifestyle on a predominantly agricultural island, Dannii wanted a way out. ÔGranps or GrandpaÕ wanted the best for his granddaughter Dannii but both had different perspectives on Ôthe way outÔ.
One such avenue was getting married to someone outside the ÔvillageÕ preferably someone who had affluence or perceived as having affluence. The dilemma was that this individual who should take his granddaughterÕs hand in marriage, should be approved by him according to religious rites. Dannii, would have none of it; she had a mind of her own.
