It was given to Frodo Baggins in Rivendell by his cousin Bilbo, the original Ringbearer, who named it Sting. It was discovered by Bilbo in a troll hoard along with the swords Glamdring and Orcrist . Sting served Frodo on his harrowing journey to destroy the One Ring, and Frodos companion Samwise Gamgee used it to severely wound the great spider Shelob in Cirith Ungol.
