COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Skills for Effective Interpersonal Communication course. This program will equip you with the conceptual understanding, behavioural awareness, and practical communication techniques required to interact successfully with others across diverse personal and professional contexts. You will explore the foundations of interpersonal communication, the models that explain how people exchange meaning, the principles that govern healthy communication, and the skills that enable individuals to build relationships, resolve misunderstandings, and communicate ethically and effectively.
This course begins by examining diversity in interpersonal life and what interpersonal communication truly is. You will explore the interpersonal imperative—the human need to connect—and how Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (physical, safety, belonging, self-esteem, and self-actualisation) shapes communication behaviours. This section also explores how to participate effectively in a diverse society by recognising differences, avoiding assumptions, and adapting respectfully. You will examine linear, interactive, and transactional models of communication, the communication continuum, and the distinctions between I–It, I–You, and I–Thou forms of communication that represent varying levels of relational depth and recognition.
The next learning area focuses on the core features of interpersonal communication. You will explore selective, systemic, unique, processual, transactional, and individual communication features, as well as the importance of personal knowledge and shared meaning. This section highlights how meaning is co-created between communicators, how interpersonal exchanges evolve over time, and why communication is contextual and influenced by the environment, relationship history, and personal perspectives.
A further learning area examines the key principles of interpersonal communication. You will explore why we cannot not communicate—because behaviour itself communicates meaning—and why interpersonal communication is irreversible. This section examines how ethical choices influence communication, how people construct meanings through interpretation and experience, how metacommunication (communication about communication) shapes understanding, and how interpersonal communication develops and sustains relationships. You will also explore why interpersonal communication is not a panacea; while essential, it cannot solve all relational challenges without effort, boundaries, and mutual responsibility.
Another learning area focuses on developing strong communication competence. You will examine how interpersonal communication effectiveness can be learned, the guidelines for communication competence, and how to develop a broad range of communication skills. This section explores how to adapt communication appropriately to different people and situations, how to engage in dual perspective, and how to increase your ability to take the perspective of others. You will also explore how to monitor your communication to stay aware of your impact and how to commit to effective and ethical communication practices across different relational settings.
The final learning area brings these concepts together through the five requirements for communication competence. You will explore self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, cognitive complexity, and commitment—as the core capabilities that allow individuals to communicate thoughtfully, respectfully, and effectively. This section reinforces how ongoing practice, reflection, and intention support continual improvement in interpersonal effectiveness.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand interpersonal communication frameworks, recognise communication patterns, apply ethical principles, interpret meanings accurately, adjust communication styles, engage in dual perspective, monitor your interactions, and consistently demonstrate competence across diverse interpersonal situations.
